About the author
호는 국초(菊初). 1862년 경기도 음죽 출생. 일본 도쿄정치학교를 졸업하고, 러일 전쟁이 발발한 후 일본육군성 1군 사령부 소속의 통역관으로 복무했다. 〈국민신보〉와 〈만세보〉의 주필을 지냈으며, 한국 최초의 신소설 《혈의 누》, 《귀의 성》 등을 신문에 연재하였다. 1907년 7월에는 대한 신문사의 사장이 되었으며 이때 이완용과 두터운 친분 관계를 유지하는 등 친일을 하였다. 초기 신소설을 개척하였다고 평가받는다.
