황기록 ≪편월≫은 한마디로 스케일이 큰 소설이다. 작가의 손안에서 펼쳐지는 모든 장면은 소설이라기보다는 차라리 한 편의 대하드라마에 가깝다. 그래서 그런지 인물들도 시원시원하고, 전투 모습도 거침없다. 또한 그만큼 강한 흡인력으로 시종일관 독자들의 시선을 묶어 놓는다. 무엇보다 강조하고 싶은 것은 ‘현실성’이다. 편월의 인물들은 무공을 익히는 대신 전쟁터에서 살아남기 위해 칼을 휘두른다. 정규군 대신 진형의 최전방에서 목숨 받이가 되어야 하는 잡가군이지만, 난세를 살아가는 그들에겐 그것이 삶이요, 생계다. 편월은 그 안에서 성장하는 아이의 이름이다. 전쟁터에서 나고 자라 동심 대신 전황을 읽으며, 한 성의 주인이 되는 것이 꿈이다. 즉 작가는 어린아이의 순수함과 전쟁의 잔인함이라는 부조화 속에서 긴장의 극대화를 끌어내고 있다.
