Hans Christian Andersen was born in Odense, Denmark, on April 2, 1805. Andersen achieved worldwide fame for writing innovative and influential fairy tales. Many of his stories, including "The Ugly Duckling" and "The Princess and the Pea," remain classics of the genre. He died in Copenhagen on August 4, 1875. Charles Dickens (February 7, 1812 to June 9, 1870) was a British novelist, journalist, editor, illustrator and social commentator who wrote such beloved classic novels as Oliver Twist, A Christmas Carol, Nicholas Nickleby, David Copperfield, A Tale of Two Cities and Great Expectations. Mary Eleanor Wilkins Freeman (born Oct. 31, 1852, Randolph, Mass., U.S.died March 13, 1930, Metuchen, N.J.) was an American writer known for her stories and novels of lives in New England villages. Henry Jackson van Dyke Jr. (November 10, 1852 April 10, 1933) was an American author, educator, and clergyman. Stephen P. H. Butler Leacock (30 December 1869 28 March 1944) was a Canadian teacher, political scientist, writer, and humourist. Between the years 1915 and 1925, he was the best-known English-speaking humourist in the world. Leo Tolstoy (born August 28, 1828, Yasnaya Polyana, Tula province, Russian Empiredied November 7, 1910, Astapovo, Ryazan province), Russian author, a master of realistic fiction and one of the world's greatest novelists. O. Henry, pseudonym of William Sydney Porter, (born Sept. 11, 1862, Greensboro, N.C., U.S.died June 5, 1910, New York, N.Y.), American short-story writer whose tales romanticized the commonplacein particular the life of ordinary people in New York City.
