Australians fought in every theatre of war in World War II. So high was their involvement that by 1943 more than 15 per cent of Australia's population was serving in the armed forces.

In this day-by-day record, we see how the war escalated and how the commitment of Australian forces increased. All the land battles in which Australian troops took part are covered, from the Libyan campaign in 1940-41 to Balikpapanin in 1945. Bruce Swain served in the Royal Australian Navy for 23 years, leaving in 1980 with the rank of Lieutenant Commander. His early interest in naval history has grown and encouraged him to broaden his study to cover all three services and particularly their participation in World War II. He now lives in Hervey Bay, Queensland, with his wife and two beagles.
