Feyre is a huntress, but when she kills what she thinks is a wolf in the woods, a terrifying creature arrives to demand retribution. Dragged to a treacherous magical land she knows about only from legends, Feyre discovers that her captor, Tamlin, is not truly a beast, but one of the lethal, immortal Fae.

And there's more to the Fae than the legends suggest.

As Feyre adapts to her new home, her feelings for Tamlin begin to change. Icy hostility turns to fiery passion that burns through every lie she's been told about the beautiful, dangerous world of the Fae. But shadows are creeping in, and Tamlin has a dark secret that he cannot share. Fate brought Feyre to Tamlin for a reason, but saving him from the darkness that threatens his world will lead her down a path that she can never return from.

Enter the world of Sarah J. Maas and discover the sweeping romantic fantasy that everyone's talking about for yourself.

Key scenes with amazing attention to detail, they really make you feel present and tensely engaged with the story. Well developed characters who I look forward to spending more time with. Equally I found myself groaning multiple times at the dim actions of Feyre who explicitly does nothing she's told to do, and the romance feels a bit forced and blunt at points.

Entertaining but an obviously blatant copy of Beauty and the Beast with a bit of Hunger Games and Tithe thrown in and not nearly as good. If you love those books I recommend not reading this as you may hate it, and spend the whole time comparing this story to those ones. If you're new to this genre and have never read the aforementioned books you may enjoy this, but there are much better fantasy novels out there.

Being in Feyre's head and reading how she understands the world was very mindful for me. As she was a paintress, she looked at the colour of the world in a totally different way than I expected and in many ways the world was so rich and multifaceted I felt as if I was walking through a painting. It was refreshing to have a female lead in fiction who wasn't a damsel in distress in the conventional sense; an accomplished huntress, pragmatic and practical and fiesty! It wasn't love at first sight for her and Tamlin and I enjoyed the slow burn of their romance. Rhys was one of the most fascinating parts of the novel, it really takes something to have someone who you are both disgusted with but also can't stop rooting for in equal measure. I wished the details of the blight hadn't been told through Alis, I'm not sure how else it could have been done. I can forgive this as I understand pacing would be effected otherwise. Very much enjoyed it, I can't wait to try the next one.
