A Dream of Red Mansions, also known as The Story of the Stone, Hong Lou Meng, is a couplet novel composed by the Qing Dynasty writer Cao Xueqin and is one of the Four Great Classical Novels of Chinese literature. Taking the ups and downs of four leading aristocratic families: Jia, Shi, Wang, Xue as its background, Cao created a tragic love triangle story among Jia Baoyu, Lin Daiyu and Xue Baochai, revealed the crisis of feudalism. The novel has a pervasive influence and worldwide reputation at home and abroad. Cao Xueqin (ca. 1715–ca. 1763), whose given name was Zhan and courtesy name was Mengruan, was one of China's greatest novelists and was born to a Han Chinese clan but lived in poverty with the fall of his family. Cao devoted his life to writing A Dream of Red Mansions. But he left the work unfinished. The last 40 chapters of the book was usually considered to be completed by Gao E.
