A linguistic analysis of the coordinate conjunction construction in English is given. It is shown that a standard transformational rule is insufficiently powerful to generate coordinate constructions correctly, and a broadening of linguistic theory in the form of a Principle for Conjunction is proposed. Grammatical rules are developed for the generation of a wide variety of coordinate constructions, and their place in the MITRE grammar of English is discussed. (Author).
