The determination of the state of stress at a point in a plane, from strain measurements made on intersecting gage lines, is not an exceptionally difficult problem, the solution being based on the generally well-known biaxial relationships between stress and strain. In the treatment of this problem, as in many others, there will always be those who will employ the mathematical manipulations in the reduction of the data, while others will prefer a graphical method for accomplishing the same purpose.
