Yet again I am left speechless after reading this authors work. I said it before, and I will say it again, Abbie Roads has the something special that takes her from being a good author to a spectacular one. Hunt the Dawn went above and beyond my expectation and amazed me with how well the mix of paranormal, suspense, thriller, and romance could all come together. Evanee Brown has nothing except her car, her job at a rundown diner, and her place at a hotel that also rents rooms by the hour. She wants to leave town and leave behind her dark and painful past but she still has ties to the town and hasn't yet worked up the courage to leave. She immediately regrets that decision one night when her past comes back to haunt her. Well, until Lathaniel Montgomery comes to her rescue that is. She doesn't know what it is but with Lathan she feels safe for the first time in forever and she doesn't want to leave that feeling. And for Lathan, Evanee makes him feel protected and while around her, his abilities aren't as out of control as usual. But being together also brings out an ability Evanee didn't know she possessed and now her dreams are becoming way too real. My heart was absolutely breaking for these characters during some parts of this book and I loved that I felt such a strong connection to both of them. Reading about Lathan and Evanee felt like I was in a dream and watching everything that was going on. I honestly don't even think I can fully describe what this reading experience was like because this book truly did suck me in and took me for one crazy ride. The story was dark and a little twisted but also amazingly sweet and romantic. I will never know how Abbie was able to pull off mixing two very different things together and put them in the same book all while having it make sense. Sure suspense and romance goes together a lot, but this was more than that. It was raw and powerful and so intriguing I never wanted it to end. I loved the mix of the paranormal in this story and it definitely added the uniqueness to it. Lathan's ability to smell memories was something I've never read about before and it was fun to have something new to explore. I found Lathan very captivating and just when I thought I knew all there was to know about him I would be proved wrong by another secret popping up. There wasn't even just one thing about him that made me like his character so much, it was just him as a whole. Evanee, for me, was a good character but I did find myself wishing that I knew more about her. I liked that she was strong and didn't run when things got weird with Lathan and his abilities. The fact that she stuck around made me like her, but as previously stated, I did want to know more about her and her past. Though how she was in the present and how she reacted to everything going on is what drew me to her character. Bottom line, Hunt the Dawn is gripping and gritty, and something you need to read. Lathan and Evanee will grab on to your heart and not let go until the very last page, and it is the best reading experience I've had all year. It was like I felt everything they felt, and even the moments I thought my heart would actually break were worth it. Even with feeling like I needed more information on Evanee, I'm giving this book five stars. It's just that good.

***4 ‘What a hell of a ride’ Stars*** After finishing Race the Darkness I knew I was going to get my hands on the next book and knew that there would be a good dose of dark and crazy goodness going on, but I didn’t see all that coming at me and making it difficult to do a spoiler free review, but I will persevere...so here goes nothing. Much of the reason I wanted to get my hands on Hunt the Dawn was because of Lathan, who we meet in Race the Darkness. I wanted to know more about him and what the tat on his face was all about and I was not disappointed at all. He’s as complex as I thought he would be and then some. The unique way in which he can read memories is mind blowing and though he has come to accept them for what it is and maintain some control of it, he’s had to become something of a hermit in order to do it. There is a kindness to him that one wouldn’t expect considering what he’s been through, which was pretty damn horrific, and though he should be a cynic and mad at the world, he isn’t. To say Evanee is down-on-her-luck is an understatement, she never truly had a shot in hell, and yet she hasn’t given up on escaping the hell she’s living in and finding a slice of happiness. Even before finding out just how brutal her childhood was I loved Evanee’s fighting spirit and how she is world weary but her soul is still intact. She’s done what was needed to be done to keep herself safe and relatively sane and now that her dreams have found a way to merge with reality her inner strength is even more apparent. Lathan and Evanee’s journey had a lot of bumps in the road, most of which were dark and crazy and coming at them from outside influences, that ended up bringing them closer together rather than tearing them apart. Fate steps in and throws them into each other paths and though things do progress quickly it’s not an insta-love situation. It’s a mutual sense of protectiveness for the other and the feelings of being safe when in the other presence. Their unique abilities also connect them and it was quite fascinating to see just how they complimented each other. The writing was engaging and though there were spots that dragged a bit for me, I was fascinated by how everything played out with Lathan and Evanee’s relationship, their abilities and how the serial killer storyline was woven into the fabric of their story. If you didn’t read Race the Darkness you won’t be lost though the main characters from the book do make appearances in Hunt the Dawn. Also, this one has some pretty big triggers so if abuse of any kind is one of your triggers then you may want to tread carefully if you choose to read this book. ~ Copy received from the publisher via NetGalley and reviewed voluntarily ~

Dark and edgy thriller that incorporates paranormal along with the main characters being connected on a mythological base like the couple in the first book. The author sure likes to put uncomfortable story lines in her books. There are times when reading her stories that its a cross between being paranormal romantic suspense and straight horror. There are many sums that make up this story. We briefly met Lathan Montgomery in the first book. He was wrapped in mystery and I admit to being intrigued and wanted to know more about him. After a childhood spent in and out of mental institutions Lathan pretty much lives a life of isolation due to his gifts. He can smell the energy imprints of people's memories. He is currently working with his best friend Gill to try and find the serial killer the FBI has dubbed the Strategist. Evanee Brown has lived both a living nightmare and one in the dreamworld. When her past comes back to attack her, Lathan happens to be at the right place at the right time to save her. They have an immediate connection (per the mythological link) and Lathan immediately know he must protect her. There is a dual suspense story line with Evenee past and the Strategist both putting her in danger. I was turning the pages so fast that I couldnt believe when it ended. I wasnt ready for it to be over.
