About this ebook

Machine learning is one of the fastest growing areas of computer science, with far-reaching applications. The aim of this textbook is to introduce machine learning, and the algorithmic paradigms it offers, in a principled way. The book provides an extensive theoretical account of the fundamental ideas underlying machine learning and the mathematical derivations that transform these principles into practical algorithms. Following a presentation of the basics of the field, the book covers a wide array of central topics that have not been addressed by previous textbooks. These include a discussion of the computational complexity of learning and the concepts of convexity and stability; important algorithmic paradigms including stochastic gradient descent, neural networks, and structured output learning; and emerging theoretical concepts such as the PAC-Bayes approach and compression-based bounds. Designed for an advanced undergraduate or beginning graduate course, the text makes the fundamentals and algorithms of machine learning accessible to students and nonexpert readers in statistics, computer science, mathematics, and engineering.

Aditya Tandon received his B.Tech. Degree in Computer Science Engineering from A.I.E.T. Jaipur (Rajasthan), India and M.Tech. Degree in Computer Science and Engineering from Amity University, Noida (U.P.), India. He has experience as Assistant Professor (contractual basis) at Ch. Brahm Prakash Govt. Engineering College for 4+ years. Currently, he is a Research Scholar at Amity University, Noida.


His research interests are in the field of Artificial Intelligence, Internet of Things, Wireless Sensor Networks and Network Security. So far, he has published ten papers in reputed conferences and journals. He has been awarded with Dewang Mehta National Education Awards (Delhi Region) titled “Best Professor in Information Technology”. 

Working as System Analyst in Department of Information Science & Engineering, Poojya Doddappa Appa College of Engineering, Kalaburagi. He is a benevolent yearner& a perpetual learner. A yearner for knowledge & a learner for pleasure, committed, curious & courteous. Believer of “Knowledge is Diligence”. He has submitted his Thesis & is about to complete his Ph.D from Sri SatyaSai University & Medical Sciences, Sehore. (MP). He has published his research papers in IEEE, Springer, Scopus & UGC recognized Journals. He has delivered many talks as Resource Person on Cloud Computing, Networking, Software Testing & Roles of ICT in NAAC. He has organized, attended many National & International Conferences, Workshops & Seminars.

Dr. Surbhi Bhatia has 8 years of teaching and research experience. She is currently teaching in King Faisal University, Saudi Arabia. She has published more than 20 scholarly research articles, conference papers, and book chapters in high indexing databases. She has published one patent. She is the Editor and Reviewer of reputed and indexed journals of IEEE and Springer. She has supervised over 10 projects at Undergraduate to Postgraduate level. 

Kamalakanta Sethi is a PhD scholar in School of Electrical Sciences, Indian Institute of Technology Bhubaneswar, India. He received his M Tech degree from National Institute of Technology Warangal, India in 2014. He completed his B Tech from National Institute of Science and Technology, Berhampur, India in 2009. He has worked as aAdhoc Faculty in National Institute of Technology Warangal, India from May 2014 to May 2015. His research interests include design of advanced cryptosystems and intelligent intrusion detection system for cloud security. 

Bata Krishna Tripathy is a PhD scholar in School of Electrical Sciences, Indian Institute of Technology Bhubaneswar, India. He received his M Tech degree from Indian Institute of Technology Kharagpur, India in 2014. He completed his B Tech from Institute of Technical Education and Research, Bhubaneswar, India in 2007. He has worked as a Software Engineer in Hewlett-Packard Global Soft Pvt Ltd, India from July 2007 to July 2009. His research interests include mobile ad hoc and sensor networks, internet of things (IoT), computer networks, and network security.
