Mais le bras de Malatesta porte loin et il la traque. Il charge un tueur d'assassiner Madeleine afin de pouvoir emmener ses enfants à Rome sans difficulté. Comme le tueur échoue, Alain Boulanger se rend à Rome. Là, il veut convaincre le chef de la mafia de rendre les enfants à leur mère. Mais Malatesta est un adversaire coriace et sans scrupules, ce que le détective privé ressent dès son arrivée à Rome.
