Die Studie versteht sich als eine streng empirische Untersuchung zu den Funktionsverbgefügen (FVG) im Gegenwartsdeutsch, welche die faits de langue im Saussureschen Sinne in den Mittelpunkt rückt. Ausgangspunkt sind zehn in der Literatur als „typisch“ geltende Funktionsverben. Neben quantitativen Angaben wird eine detaillierte Analyse der Verwendungskontexte – interne und externe Valenz – geboten. Die Analyse der Komplemente befasst sich sowohl mit ihrer syntaktischen Form (Beschreibung des Stellenplans von FVG) als auch mit ihren semantisch gesteuerten Kombinationsmöglichkeiten.
