My very favorite childhood Christmas story, which my grandfather (G.P.) read to my mother growing up, and later also to his grandchildren. Christmas at the Hollow Tree Inn is a wonderful tale from Albert Bigelow Paine, splendidly illustrated by J. M. Conde. For the uninitiated in Hollow Tree lore, there are many stories preceding this in which Mr. Dog does battle with the residents of the Hollow Tree: Mr. Coon, Mr. Possum and the Old Black Crow. In the final book, they ultimately become friends. This story, the last in the series, tells of how Mr. Dog initiates the Hollow Tree folk in the tradition of Santa Claus. The whole book, pictures and all, is yours to read courtesy of Google.
