Nel settembre del 1787 il governatore dello Stato di New York, George Clinton, pubblicava sul principale giornale locale un attacco alla nuova Costituzione federale. Ne seguiva un acceso dibattito per il voto di ratifica costituzionale che porterà alla stesura del Federlist, una tra le più importanti opere di scienza politica della storia moderna. Le lettere che compongono questa raccolta, quasi tutte inedite per l'Italia, documentano la fase iniziale dello scontro proponendo le posizioni dei due principali antagonisti: Alexander Hamilton per i fautori della riforma federale, George Clinton tra i difensori dell'organizzazione confederale.
