ಡಿ. ಆರ್. ನಾಗರಾಜರ ಬರವಣಿಗೆಯಲ್ಲಿ ಇದೊಂದು ಪ್ರವರ್ತಕ ಗುಣ ಪಡೆದುಕೊಂಡ ಆಚಾರ್ಯಕೃತಿ ಎನ್ನಬಹುದು. ಅಲ್ಲಮನನ್ನು ಅವನ ಕಾಲದಲ್ಲಿಟ್ಟು ನೋಡುವಂತೆಯೇ, ನನ್ನ ಕಾಲದ ದೃಷ್ಟಿಯಿಂದಲೂ ವಿಶ್ಲೇಷಿಸುವ ನಾಗರಾಜರ ಪ್ರತಿಭೆ ಅಸಾಮಾನ್ಯ ಶಕ್ತಿಯುಳ್ಳದ್ದು. ಎಕಕಾಲದಲ್ಲಿ ದಾರ್ಶನಿಕನೂ, ಕವಿಯೂ ಆದ ಅಲ್ಲಮನನ್ನು ತತ್ಪರವಾಗಿ ಅರಿಯುವ ಪ್ರಯತ್ನದಲ್ಲಿ ಭಾರತೀಯ ದರ್ಶನಗಳ ಬಗ್ಗೆ ನಮ್ಮ ತಿಳುವಳಿಕೆಯೂ, ಜೊತೆಗೆ ಭಾರತೀಯ ಕಾವ್ಯಮೀಮಾಂಸೆಯ ಗೃಹೀತಗಳೂ ಯಾಕೆ ಬದಲಾಗಬೇಕಾಗುತ್ತವೆ ಎಂಬುದನ್ನು ಈ ಕೃತಿಯ ಉದ್ದಕ್ಕೂ ಸೂಕ್ಷ್ಮವಾಗಿ ವಿದ್ವತ್ಪೂರ್ಣವಾಗಿ ನಾಗರಾಜರು ಪರಿಶೀಲಿಸಿದ್ದಾರೆ. ಗಾಢವಾದ ಒಳನೋಟಗಳಿಂದ ಬೆಳಗುವ ನಾಗರಾಜರ ಗದ್ಯಶೈಲಿಯೂ ಇಲ್ಲಿ ಕನ್ನಡ ಸಾಹಿತ್ಯವಿಮರ್ಶೆಯ ಇತಿಹಾಸದಲ್ಲಿ ತಾನು ಏರಿದ ಎತ್ತರವನ್ನು ಸೂಚಿಸುವಂತಿದೆ. ಓದುಗನ ಪ್ರಜ್ಞೆಯನ್ನೇ ಪರಿಷ್ಕರಿಸಿ ಉಲ್ಲಾಸದಲ್ಲಿ ಹಿಗ್ಗುವಂತೆ ಮಾಡುವ ಈ ಕೃತಿ ಪ್ರಪಂಚದ ಯಾವ ಭಾಷೆಯಲ್ಲಾದರೂ ಉತ್ಕೃಷ್ಟ ಕೃತಿ ಎನ್ನಿಸಿಕೊಂಡೀತು. ಕನ್ನಡದ ಒಂದು ಮನಸ್ಸು ಐರೋಪ್ಯಪ್ರಣೀತವಾದ ಆಧುನಿಕತೆಯನ್ನು ಅಲ್ಲಮನ ಮೂಲಕ ಮೀರಿ ನಮ್ಮ ಪ್ರಸ್ತುತ ಸಾಂಸ್ಕೃತಿಕ ಸಂದರ್ಭಕ್ಕೆ ಚೈತನ್ಯಪೂರ್ಣವಾಗಿ ಎದುರಾಗುವ ಪ್ರಕ್ರಿಯೆಯನ್ನು ಪ್ರತಿನಿಧಿಸುವ ಈ ಕೃತಿ ಕನ್ನಡ ಸಾರಸ್ವತ ಲೋಕದಲ್ಲಿ ಗಂಭೀರವಾದ ಚರ್ಚೆಗೆ ಅರ್ಹವಾಗಿದೆ.

Dr. D.R. Nagaraj (1954–1998) was an Indian cultural critic, political commentator and an expert on medieval and modern Kannada poetry and Dalit movement who wrote in Kannada and English languages. He won Sahitya Akademi Award for his work Sahitya Kathana. He started out as a Marxist critic but renounced the Marxist framework that he had used in the book Amruta mattu Garuda as too reductionist and became a much more eclectic and complex thinker. He is among the few Indian thinkers to shed new light on Dalit and Bahujan politics. He regarded the Gandhi-Ambedkar debate on the issue of caste system and untouchability as the most important contemporary debate whose outcome would determine the fate of India in the 21st century.
