Pretty good book in general. In fact, it's the best learning resource for Magento I've found so far. One issue I had though was that the module in the book had a few bugs that needed ironing out which could be frustrating for a total newcomer to Magento. Also, a few of the pages on the supporting website weren't finished. I would like to have seen more detailed explanations of each line of code, I found a lot of the code was left totally unexplained. I'd also would have liked one or two more example modules

This book is awful. The first few chapters are just code pasted from the magento code base as examples, but the formatting makes it extremely difficult to read. It's easier to just review the code in an IDE. Further, the code samples don't reference the file they are pulled from, which is infuriating. The first chapter that actually provides instruction trying out your own logic in magento starts the chapter with a reference to the author's obscure command line program that isn't part of magento at all. Go somewhere else to learn magento, save your money and don't buy this book.

The book misses out part of the module for space saving. This wouldn't be so bad if the companion site link worked or when you found the code it actually worked! Try another book if you want to learn how to build a complete magento plugin.
