The story begins with a look backward at a complacent world ensnared in a network of alliances. Out of this setting emerged the cunning diplomats and statesmen who maneuvered and blundered their countries into positions that made the war inevitable. Once committed, the nations of Europe aligned into two, mighty opposing forces, and went jauntily into war, each confident that the conflict would be over before it really began. Marshall follows the personalities, strategies, errors, and the unremitting slaughter of the next four years. The story ends with the ill-conceived Treaty of Versailles, which sowed the seeds that would plunge the following generation into another world war.

Brigadier General S.L.A. Marshall, in the words of Carl Sandburg, "rates among many of us as the greatest of writers on modern war." He enlisted in the army on June 11, 1917, a month before his seventeenth birthday, and fought in the Saint-Mihiel, Meuse-Argonne, and Ypres-Lys campaigns of World War I. Between World War I and II, he worked as a journalist and editor. He entered military service again after the bombing of Pearl Harbor and was named chief historian of the European Theater. During the Korean War, he served as an operations analyst for the U.S. Eighth Army. General Marshall's other books include Blitzkrieg, Pork Chop Hill, and The River and the Gauntlet.
