Teseo, héroe de la isla de Creta, lucha contra el minotauro y despierta el amor de Ariadna y Fedra. En esta obra, Teseo representa el ideal del héroe barroco: un vencedor humilde. Sor Juana Inés de la Cruz (1648-1695) fue una religiosa jerónima y escritora novohispana, exponente del Siglo de Oro literario en español. Ingresó a la vida monacal para poder dedicarse al estudio. Cultivó la lírica, el auto sacramental, la prosa y el teatro. Entre sus mecenas se contaban importantes virreyes de Nueva España.
