Search and Rescue: Book Two

Dog wrangler Preston Echo has been in love with his brother’s best friend, copilot, and business partner since high school—and Damien Ward knew it. As Preston grew into a stunning, hard-willed man, Damien began to dream of Preston too.

Then Damien almost died in a helicopter crash. While his physical wounds are slowly healing, the blows to his self-confidence and goodwill are almost worse. His body is broken and he’s afraid to fly—how can Preston love him now?

When Preston’s brother goes on a search-and-rescue mission and disappears in an earthquake zone in Mexico, Preston and Damien are thrown together in an effort to find him and bring him back. Preston’s merciless honesty—and relentless passion—may leverage Damien into his bed, but can Damien overcome his fears to allow himself to stay there?

I wasn’t sure how Amy Lane would successfully follow last year’s Search and Rescue #1: Warm Heart, which featured a couple finally coming to terms with their mutual attraction as they worked against all odds to survive a helicopter crash – and get their critically injured friend/pilot down off the mountain alive as well. She did it. The next installment in the Search and Rescue series is the just published Silent Heart, and I read it in one long, indulgent gulp. In Silent Heart, we catch up with Damien, the injured pilot from the previous book, who’s concerned about his best friend and business partner, Glenn. As part of their search and rescue business, Glenn’s gone off to Mexico on a mission and disappeared in an earthquake. So. Damien and Glenn’s younger brother, Preston, go to find Glenn – and the person Glenn was rescuing. Of course, there are complicating factors. Damien’s previous injuries required several surgeries to repair, and his body isn’t as capable as before. Preston is neuro-atypical, more comfortable with dogs than people, though he is quite capable as long as he has his favorite dog and his tablet with games and puzzles to help center him. Preston has also been in love with Damien for a decade or so. While Damien also has feelings for Preston, he feels he’s too old and too broken for Preston. Preston, though, is no longer the adolescent Damien previously counseled on appropriate behavior with friends. Preston is a man, and wants the man he loves to recognize their mutual passion for one another. Because I dislike reviews which give away lots of the plot, I’ll just offer a few suggestions: (1) Give Preston a chance. Lane has chosen to just dive into the character without a lot of explanation, which gives Preston the opportunity to reveal himself on his terms. (2) Understand that the “slow burn” has been happening for all the years these two characters have known one another. (3) Enjoy the action, the fun, the many animals and the characters’ interactions with them. I can’t wait to read the next book!

About the author

Amy Lane lives in a crumbling crapmansion with two teenagers, a passel of furbabies, and a bemused spouse. She’s been a finalist in the RITAs™ twice, has won honorable mention for an Indiefab, and has a couple of Rainbow Awards to her name. She also has too damned much yarn, a penchant for action-adventure movies, and a need to know that somewhere in all the pain is a story of Wuv, Twu Wuv, which she continues to believe in to this day! She writes fantasy, urban fantasy, mystery/suspense, and contemporary romance—and if you accidentally make eye contact, she’ll bore you to tears with literary theory. She’ll also tell you that sacrifices, large and small, are worth the urge to write.
