Há 150 anos, mais precisamente em 24 de Novembro de 1859, Darwin deu a conhecer um novo paradigma da história natural através da publicação A Origem das Espécies. Como a epistemologia já constatou, a teoria darwiniana da descendência com modificações ou teoria da seleção natural levou cerca de 20 anos a ser construída, ou seja, entre 1837 e 1859, grosso modo. Os 150 anos de história do darwinismo e da evolução apresentam a fecundidade da teoria da seleção natural, tanto no plano das ciências da vida e do homem como no plano das culturas. Tal como em quase todo o mundo, também em Portugal a receção de Darwin iniciou-se nos anos 60 do século XIX, apresentando novidades surpreendentes, atendendo à escala portuguesa. Em 2009 o Grupo de História e Sociologia da Ciência do Centro de Estudos Interdisciplinares do Século XX da Universidade de Coimbra organizou o Encontro Internacional “Darwin, Darwinismos, Evolução (1859-2009)”. Esta reunião científica pretendeu ser um espaço de discussão aberto a todos os interessados neste tema, tanto no plano nacional como internacional. Os textos agora publicados constituem uma coletânea de muitos textos ampliados e que serviram de base às comunicações apresentadas. 

 

150 years ago, on 24th November 1859, Darwin launched a new paradigm of natural history with the publication of his work On the Origin of the Species. As epistemology has shown, Darwin’s theory of descent with modification, or the theory of natural selection, took some 20 years to develop (i.e. between 1837 and 1859, broadly speaking). The 150-year history of Darwinism and evolution show the fecundity of this theory, in both the life sciences and culture. In Portugal, as in much of the rest of the world, the reception of Darwin only really got going in the 1960s, and took an interesting form. In 2009, the History and Sociology of Science group at the Centre for 20th century Interdisciplinary Studies at the University of Coimbra organized the international conference on “Darwin, Darwinisms, Evolution (1859-2009)”, to provide a forum for anyone interested in the subject, both nationally and internationally. The texts published here are extended versions of the papers presented at that conference

Ana Leonor Pereira é Doutorada em História da Cultura com a dissertação “Darwin em Portugal. Filosofia. História. Engenharia Social 1865-1914” (2 vols., 1998). É Professora da Faculdade de Letras da Universidade de Coimbra e Investigadora do Grupo de História e Sociologia da Ciência do CEIS20 da mesma Universidade. Os seus interesses de investigação preferenciais são: história da cultura, história da cultura científica, história das ideias, história das ideias científicas, história da medicina, história da farmácia, história das ciências da vida, sublinhando-se projectos sobre a história do corpo, a história da psiquiatria, a história da higiene e da saúde pública, a história da farmácia, dos alimentos, medicamentos e venenos, bem como a história do darwinismo em Portugal. Tem coordenado e participado em projectos de investigação nacionais e internacionais neste âmbito, alguns financiados pela FCT, FCG e Ministerio de Ciencia e Innovación (Espanha). É autora / co-autora de mais de 150 publicações sob a forma de livros, capítulos de livros e artigos publicados em revistas científicas e obras colectivas em Portugal e no estrangeiro e é autora / co-autora de comunicações e conferências apresentadas em reuniões nacionais e internacionais. Integra redes de investigação internacionais. Além das teses de mestrado e doutoramento orientadas, em 2011 é orientadora /co-orientadora de onze doutoramentos e pós doutoramentos dos quais nove financiados pela FCT. 

She holds a Doctorate in History of Culture with a dissertation entitled “Darwin em Portugal. Filosofia. História. Engenharia Social 1865-1914” [Darwin in Portugal: Philosophy, History, Social Engineering 1865-1914] (2 vols., 1998). She is a Professor at the Faculty of Letters of the University of Coimbra and a Researcher at the History and Sociology of Science Group CEIS20 at the same institution. Her principal research interests are: the history of culture, the history of scientific culture, the history of ideas, the history of scientific ideas, the history of medicine, the history of pharmacology, the history of the life sciences, (especially projects on the history of the body), the history of psychiatry, the history of hygiene and public health, medicine and poisons, as well as the history of Darwinism in Portugal. She has coordinated and participated in projects at national and international levels in these areas, some of which were financed by the FCT, FCG and the Ministry of Science and Innovation in Spain. She is author or co-author of more than a hundred and fifty publications in book form, book chapters and articles published in scientific journals and collective works in Portugal and abroad, and is author or co-author of statements and conference presentations at national and international meetings. She is also part of international research networks. Her supervision of thesis work at both masters and doctoral level since 2011 has seen her as advisor or co-advisor of eleven doctorates or post-doctorates, of which nine were financed by the Foundation for Science and Technology. 

 

João Rui Pita é Doutorado em Farmácia com uma tese de história da farmácia (1995). É Professor da Faculdade de Farmácia da Universidade de Coimbra e Investigador do Grupo de História e Sociologia da Ciência do CEIS20 da mesma Universidade. Os seus interesses de investigação preferenciais são: história da farmácia e dos medicamentos, a história da saúde, da higiene e da saúde pública, a história da ciência, relações farmácia, medicamentos, saúde e sociedade, bem como a ética e deontologia farmacêutica. Tem coordenado e participado em projectos de investigação nacionais e internacionais neste âmbito, sendo alguns deles financiados pela alguns financiados pela FCT, FCG e Ministerio de Ciencia e Innovación (Espanha).. É autor de livros, capítulos de livros e artigos publicados em revistas científicas e obras colectivas em Portugal e no estrangeiro e é autor / co-autor de comunicações e conferências apresentadas em reuniões nacionais e internacionais.. Além de várias teses de mestrado e doutoramento orientadas, em 2011 é orientador / co-orientador de catorze doutoramentos e pós doutoramentos dos quais doze financiados pela FCT. 

He has a Doctorate in Pharmacy with a thesis on the history of pharmacy (1995). He is a Professor at the Faculty of Pharmacy of the University of Coimbra and a Researcher on the History and Sociology of Science Group CEIS20 at the same university. His preferred research interests are: history of pharmacy and the history of medicine, the history of health, hygiene and public health, the history of science, pharmacy relations, medication, health and society, as well as ethics and pharmaceutical deontology. He has coordinated and participated in national and international research projects in this area, some of which were grant-aided by the Foundation for Science and Technology (FCT) in Portugal and the Spanish Ministry of Science and Innovation. He has written books, book chapters and articles published in scientific journals and collective works in Portugal and abroad and is author or co-author of papers and conference speeches presented at national and international venues. He has advised many Master’s and Doctoral students, and as of 2011, has supervised or co-supervised fourteen doctorates and post-doctorates, of which twelve were grant-aided by the Foundation for Science and Technology (FCT). 

Pedro Ricardo Fonseca é Licenciado em História pela Faculdade de Letras da Universidade de Coimbra. É Bolseiro de Doutoramento da FCT inscrito para doutoramento em História da Ciência, da Técnica e da Cultura Científica na Faculdade de Letras da Universidade de Coimbra. É Investigador do Grupo de História e Sociologia da Ciência do CEIS20. O seu tema de doutoramento é “Darwin em Portugal (1910-1974)” sendo orientado pelos Profs Doutores Ana Leonor Pereira e João Rui Pita. É autor de vários trabalhos científicos sobre a temática da sua tese e tem apresentado os resultados da sua investigação em reuniões científicas nacionais e internacionais. 

He holds a Bachelor’s degree in History from the Faculty of Letters of the University of Coimbra. He has received a PhD scholarship from the Foundation for Science and Technology (FCT) and is enrolled in the Doctorate in the History of Science, Technology and Scientific Culture at the Faculty of Letters of the University of Coimbra. He is a researcher in the CEIS20 Group on the History and Sociology of Science. The theme of his doctorate is “Darwin in Portugal (1910-1974)” and he is being supervised in his work by Professor Ana Leonor Pereira and Professor João Rui Pita. He is the author of several scientific works on his dissertation topic and has presented his research at national and international scientific meetings.
