बंकिमचंद्र चटर्जी का जन्म 26 जून, 1838 को एक समृद्ध बंगाली परिवार में हुआ था। उनकी शिक्षा हुगली और प्रेसीडेंसी कॉलेज में हुई। सन् 1857 में उन्होंने बी.ए. पास किया और 1869 में कानून की डिग्री हासिल की। इसके बाद उन्होंने सरकारी नौकरी कर ली और सन् 1891 में सरकारी सेवा से रिटायर हुए। ‘आनंद मठ’ (1882) राजनीतिक उपन्यास है। उनके अन्य उपन्यासों में ‘दुर्गेशनंदिनी’, ‘मृणालिनी’, ‘इंदिरा’, ‘राधारानी’, ‘कृष्णकांतेर दफ्तर’, ‘देवी चौधरानी’ और ‘मोचीराम गौरेर जीवनचरित’ प्रमुख हैं। उनकी कविताएँ ‘ललिता और मानस’ नामक संग्रह में प्रकाशित हुईं। उन्होंने धर्म, सामाजिक और समसामयिक मुद्दों पर आधारित कई निबंध लिखे। उनके उपन्यासों का भारत की लगभग सभी भाषाओं में अनुवाद हुआ है। बँगला में सिर्फ बंकिम और शरतचंद्र चट्टोपाध्याय को यह गौरव हासिल है कि उनकी रचनाएँ हिंदी सहित सभी भारतीय भाषाओं में आज भी बड़े चाव से पढ़ी जाती हैं। उनका निधन अप्रैल 1894 में हुआ।
