Mary Poser lives a modest life in the Country and Western town of Nashville. Simha, a visiting Bollywood film director, notices her beauty and sparks fly between them. Mary’s world is turned upside-down when her car rolls over a bridge into the Cumberland River. Mysteriously, a hand appears to save her. Mary’s family says it was the hand of God. Mary thinks otherwise. Mary finds counsel with her aunt, who works with the butterflies at the Zoo because she cannot bring herself to cross the bridge that almost took her life. Simha returns to Mary but her ex-boyfriend, Jason, seeks to intervene by rekindling their relationship. To everyone’s surprise, Simha makes a Bollywood film in Nashville. Jason proposes to Mary with his own distracted affections for another. All the time, she must hide a dangerous secret that betrays her suffering. To follow her heart or follow the crowd - which is more dangerous? Can Mary cross the bridge to her heart for her butterflies?

Traditionally, many quantitative tools have been developed to make decisions in production companies. This book explores how to use these tools for making decisions inside service industries. Thus, the authors tackle strategic, tactical, and operational problems in service companies with the help of suitable quantitative models such as heuristic and metaheuristic algorithms, simulation, or queuing theory.

Generally speaking, decision making is a hard task in business fields. Making the issue more complex, most service companies’ problems are related to the uncertainty of the service demand. This book sheds light on these types of decision problems. It provides studies that demonstrate the suitability of quantitative methods to make the right decisions. Consequently, this book presents the business analytics needed to make strategic decisions in service industries.

In this monograph as a mathematical apparatus are used and investigated several classes of differential equations. The most significant feature of these differential equations is the presence of impulsive effects.


The main goals and the results achieved in the monograph are related to the use of this class of equation for an adequate description of the dynamics of several types of processes that are subject to discrete external interventions and change the speed of development. In all proposed models the following requirements have met:

1) Presented and studied mathematical models in the book are extensions of existing known in the literature models of real objects and related processes.

2) Generalizations of the studied models are related to the admission of external impulsive effects, which lead to “jump-like” change the quantity characteristics of the described object as well as the rate of its modification.

3) Sufficient conditions which guarantee certain qualities of the dynamics of the quantities of the modeled objects are found.

4) Studies of the qualities of the modification of the modeled objects are possible to be successful by differential equations with variable structure and impulsive effects.

5) The considerations relating to the existence of the studied properties of dynamic objects cannot be realized without introducing new concepts and proving of appropriate theorems.


The main objectives can be conditionally divided into several parts: 1) New classes of differential equations with variable structure and impulses are introduced and studied; 2) Specific properties of the above-mentioned class of differential equations are introduced and studied.


The present monograph consists of an introduction and seven chapters. Each chapter contains several sections.

Complex systems have become ubiquitous and are essential to today’s society. The design of reliable complex systems and the determination of their availability are therefore very important tasks for managers and engineers. These tasks, however, can be extremely difficult to achieve, due to the fact that current analytical methods are often too complicated, time-consuming, inefficient, or even inappropriate, when dealing with real-life systems.

Simulation Methods for Reliability and Availability of Complex Systems discusses the use of computer simulation-based techniques and algorithms to determine reliability and availability (R&A) levels in complex systems, and to support the improvement of these levels both at the design stage and during the system operating stage. It presents current best practice in the field, as well as:

• sharing theoretical or applied models and decision support systems that make use of simulation to estimate and to improve system R&A levels;

• forecasting emerging technologies and trends in the use of computer simulation for R&A; and

• proposing hybrid approaches to the development of efficient methodologies designed to solve R&A-related problems in real-life systems.

Dealing with practical issues, Simulation Methods for Reliability and Availability of Complex Systems is designed to support managers and system engineers in the improvement of R&A, as well as providing a thorough exploration of the techniques and algorithms available for researchers, and for advanced undergraduate and postgraduate students.
