Benito Mussolini, esponente di spicco del Partito Socialista Italiano, fu nominato direttore del quotidiano di partito Avanti! nel 1912. Convinto anti-interventista negli anni precedenti al primo conflitto mondiale, nel 1914 si dichiarò a favore della guerra. Trovatosi in netto contrasto con la linea del partito, si dimise dalla direzione dell’Avanti! e fondò Il Popolo d’Italia, schierato su posizioni interventiste: venne quindi espulso dal PSI. Questo libro raccoglie i più significativi articoli, apparsi fra il dicembre del 1912 e il marzo del 1915 sui due quotidiani, quasi tutti a firma di Mussolini.
