About this ebook

The unforgettable tale of an orphan in Victorian London, based on the boy whose plight inspired Dr Barnardo to found his famous children’s homes.

When his mother dies, Jim Jarvis is left all alone in London. He is sent to the workhouse but quickly escapes, choosing a hard life on the streets of the city over the confines of the workhouse walls.

Struggling to survive, Jim finally finds some friends... only to be snatched away and made to work for the remorselessly cruel Grimy Nick, constantly guarded by his vicious dog, Snipe.

Will Jim ever manage to be free?

A nice idea but fairly badly written. All characters are vaguely introduced or not at all, making for a very shallow story. If you're looking for a period adventure that's well written and accurate then read any of Robert Westalls WW2 books. The Machine Gunners or The Kingdom By The Sea. This book in comparison is vague and at many times tiresome and laborious.

Most kids will not pick up this book because of the look of it, but I gave it a try. Honestly, these are the kind of books that carry good language.I have noticed that Berlie Doherty doesn't state something, she implies it.For example if someone was about to cry ,she will say that the persons eyes were filling up with water, which I quite like. Also, the story line is intresting. It is about a boy called Jim Jarvis who lived in the Victorian times and was taken to a workhouse. In addition to that,I also studied this book in school.Overall this book is good.
