An enjoyable read, though definitely a step down from Battlemage. Feels more like a setup for the next book, which seems promising. This entry feels more like book 1.5 than book 2. Magic plays a minimal role, despite being a central plot point, which is disappointing. In the afterword of Battlemage the author talked about making magic interesting by giving it rules, limits, and a consequence for use. These rules don't appear to exist anymore. Be aware that major characters from Battlemage seldom (if ever) make an appearance, and are not the focus. Still looking forward to the next book however. 3.25 stars

Way better than battlemage. The pacing was much better, The story was far less predictable, and I felt far more involved in the story than I did with battlemage. I almost didn't continue because of how disappointing battlemage was compared to how everyone I know ranted and raved over it.

Very solid read, thrilling and gripping. The characters are vivid, and the twists and turns are well done
