I love fantasy and wanted to give this a try. the world building was enjoyable but the plot was absurd. it is more or less a crime noir novel set in a fantasy setting. only the main character are the imperial family. the emperor is assassinated and instead of securing the new emperor and heir apparent the entire emperial government says screw it and actively is allowing the attempted assaination of the rest if the empirical household. the emperor's sent an imperial guard to even protect his younger son and despite the murder of that entire guard they still just shrug snd say. "oh well. sooo... enjoyable world building, horrible plot choices.

Most incredible series I've read in forever. He's able to to create huge, multifaceted worlds and people, great huge drama between them, which turns to chaos, but also which he's deftly able to completely tie up the entire plot, with a ribbon around it, in just 3 novels. No more wondering if "your authour" is ever even going to finish his *next* book, and you have this great alternative by a young, very talented novelist.

This trilogy suprised me a lot. The first half of the book is pretty slow but has some interesting pieces to keep you going but once the action picks up it does not stop. The trilogy is definitely worth a read the world is amazing the characters are well developed, the theology and all the different philosophies are really interesting and the action is phenomenal. The book isn't perfect but for me it's a series where the good parts far outnumber the not so good parts. If you are looking for a fun read you can't go wrong with this trilogy.
