Although this is book 3 in the series, it is the first that I've read and I can confirm that it is completely standalone. My enjoyment or understanding was not impacted by not having read the previous books. I enjoyed this story. All of the characters are well drawn and realistic feeling. I liked that the stress about college felt real. Unfortunately, though, I just didn't connect with this story as much as I have other stories from this author. My overall assessment is that it was a pleasant read, but I just don't think I'm going to remember much about it.

I really could not connect with the heroine (Nessa) in this book for about the first 30% of the book. I know that I don’t do well with the woes is me personality. The hero Miles came in with a mysterious present that kept me wanting to know more about him and his life. I was not a fan of his parents. Nessa was able to find herself and gain some confidence, that was in part her relationship with Miles. Nessa and Miles' chemistry was off the charts. I believe that together they made the book much better. They were able to help each other open up and communicate better; not just with each other, but with their other friends. “I want to be by your side as we figure out the mess that is our lives.” My interest has really been peaked for book 4 in the Own series My Bad Decisions. 4 star review My Next Play (On My Own #3) by Carrie Ann Ryan Miles has had feelings for Nessa for a long time but she has never seen him in this way. This friends to lovers story was a good addition to the series and had me invested from the first chapter. I was drawn into the story that Ms. Ryan wove about Miles and Nessa. When Nessa is devastated that the man she has fallen for has fallen for her friend, Miles believes that the time is right for her to finally see the real him. My Next Play was well written with characters who are easy to relate too. As Miles lends Nessa a shoulder to cry on, they will cross the line. The question is will it ruin their friendship or be the start of an amazing journey. You’ll have to one click to find out.
