La presente antología de Cartas de Pedro de Valdivia contiene epístolas escritas entre 1545 y 1552, dirigidas, entre otros, a Gonzalo Pizarro y al emperador Carlos V. Resultan interesantes además las alusiones a las fuentes financieras de la expedición y a sus expectativas políticas. En 1539, tras obtener de Francisco Pizarro el título de teniente gobernador de Chile, Valdivia inició los preparativos de la expedición que partió de Cuzco a mediados de enero de 1540 así se iniciaba su vida como aventurero.
