About the author

Charles Darwin was an English naturalist born in 1809 best known for developing the theory of natural selection. He initially studied medicine at Edinburgh but increasingly became fascinated by the natural world. Darwin travelled for five years on HMS Beagle to South America and the Galapagos Islands where his discoveries led him to the eventual publication of On the Origin of Species.
