Interesting read, captivating. The author brings your imagination fully into the experience of the emigrants.

This book is definitely told in the stylized melodrama that was popular to the time, even though the author says otherwise, but it is a very worthy account to read. I appreciate that there are many interviews with survivors and their families. I would suggest that abridged sections should be republished for California elementary school classes.

I felt that the author went to great measures to assure that only the most reliable accounts of this story was written. I also appreciate that he followed up with the survivors of this story and where they lived and died and also passed on the names of their descendants including married names etc. I am very happy that I read this book and I think that it could not have been done better. I highly recommend this book!
