They killed my mother.
They took our magic.
They tried to bury us.

Now we rise.

Zélie Adebola remembers when the soil of Orïsha hummed with magic. Burners ignited flames, Tiders beckoned waves, and Zélie’s Reaper mother summoned forth souls.

But everything changed the night magic disappeared. Under the orders of a ruthless king, maji were killed, leaving Zélie without a mother and her people without hope.

Now Zélie has one chance to bring back magic and strike against the monarchy. With the help of a rogue princess, Zélie must outwit and outrun the crown prince, who is hell-bent on eradicating magic for good.

Danger lurks in Orïsha, where snow leoponaires prowl and vengeful spirits wait in the waters. Yet the greatest danger may be Zélie herself as she struggles to control her powers and her growing feelings for an enemy.

I like the concept of the book and what it could have been, but the main plot of the book seems super rushed and unrealistic while other, non-important parts dragged on and on. This book would have flourished better if it had been split into two and given more time for the characters to grow naturally, rather than they go from hating one another to being beat friends in under a couple chapters

I was so looking forward to reading this mostly bc of the reviews. A YA story really more for pre-teens and written as such. Only on ch. 9 so far and the story is so predictable it hurts. Characters are one dementional and the writing is sophomoric. I realize I'm in the minority here so it's disappointing to say the least. This may be the first book in years that I don't get through.

Started this book with such high hopes! New gods, a new magic, a culture not explored in YA writing, BUT. I've already come to the "you shall not pass" scene from LOTR. I can see Throne of Glass series stamped everywhere. And again, like do many YA series it starts running and frantic, so much so that how can you care about the characters? How can the writer develop the characters? And the language omg. A fantastical world with plain teen language that does nothing to lift or transport them and their lives elsewhere. I wouldn't be writing this review at all but for the fact that I started this book with such high hopes. So disappointed, 3 stars just for the effort of trying something new.
