J. C. Ryle (John Charles Ryle, 1816-1900) sirvió al Señor como ministro del evangelio en iglesias parroquiales dentro de la Iglesia Anglicana durante casi cuarenta años. Luego fue Obispo de Liverpool en 1880 y llegó a tener renombre internacional como predicador, expositor de la Biblia y autor. Usó deliberadamente un estilo simple para alcanzar a la gente común. La gran meta de su ministerio era alentar la vida cristiana fuerte y seria. Sus tratados y libros se vendían por millones hacia finales del siglo XIX. Muchos de ellos han vuelto a ser publicados en la época moderna. El sucesor de Ryle como Obispo de Liverpool ha comentado: “Las palabras de un hombre como este adquieren nueva fuerza a medida que las leemos. Ryle vivía cerca de Dios, y Dios vivía a través de él”.
