I think this book makes for fascinating reading for anyone interested in epitaphs or in history in general. It contains numerous examples of the epitaphs of kings, queens, generals, poets, painters, and those famous and not so well known. There are examples or Roman and Greek epitaphs,also Saxon, Latin, and Old English. Examples are given of "Historical", "Laudatory", and "Bombastic", epitaphs, and of "Rhetorical" and "Punning" epitaphs. Also included, examples of "Acrostic", "Enigmatical", "Denunciatory" and "Revengeful" epitaphs. Some examples are given where the heart was buried seperately from the body. Coffins, brasses, and funereal emblems are mentioned. What defines an epitaph and its purpose and history is discussed. The book was published in 1857 and contains numerous examples of epitaphs dating from the early centuries of the Christian era, the 12th through 14th centuries, and the 15th through 18th centuries. The first chapter after the Preface is entitled "Royal Epitaphs". Then follows "Epitaphs of Nobility Warriors, and Statesmen". The next "Epitaphs of Ecclesiastics", then "Epitaphs of Poets" and "Miscellaneous Epitaphs". Finally we have "Ludicrous and Eccentric Epitaphs". Perhaps like me you will find the authors judgement a little harsh. A very interesting and enjoyable read!
