Great book, gives more insight of the civil war and the reasons it was fought. State rights seem to be the reason slavery fell into that category. The average man in the fighting boots was not fighting to keep slaves. Not in the book but the slavery issue was more of a political move to shame the south and give reason for the war. Read the speeches of Lincoln when he ran for senator against Douglas. Politicians back then are no different than from today they will flip flop and say anything or do anything to get elected.
