Sylvia Weber stellt in diesem Buch ein Programm vor, das auf Basis sprachspezifischer Daten automatisch aus einem Etymon das zugehörige Kontinuat berechnet. Über die reine Anwendung von Lautentwicklungen hinaus bietet ihr Programm die Möglichkeit, auch morphologiebasierte und analogische Prozesse mit einzubeziehen. Die Konzeption und Umsetzung dieses Systems zeigt die Autorin exemplarisch an der Entwicklung des Französischen aus dem Lateinischen. Das Programm ist jedoch in der Lage, die Entwicklung jeder Sprache zu simulieren und eröffnet damit der diachronen Sprachwissenschaft neue Perspektiven.
