El escritor ecuatoriano Juan León de Mera publica “Cumandá” en 1877. La novela tiene lugar en el Oriente ecuatoriano durante comienzos del siglo XIX. Ésta es su primera novela y la primera novela ecuatoriana. Su importancia no sólo radica en su carácter inaugural, sino sobre todo en haber sintetizado casi todos los temas que han tenido la historia ideológica interna del romanticismo hispanoamericano. Por ello “Cumandá” se ha convertido en una obra imprescindible de la literatura hispanoamericana.
