Torn between duty and attraction to Jamie Kilbride, Amanda stiffens her spine and determines to fulfill her promise to marry Lewis Baxter as a mail-order bride despite what her heart tells her. Unfortunately, she finds out the hard way just how evil Baxter is and it is Jamie who helps her put the pieces back together again. This novelette is fairly short but it is well written and suspenseful as Amanda navigates the difficult path of bringing a criminal to justice and overcoming the effects of his attack on her. I loved Jamie and Amanda's friends and could also appreciate Amanda's character as she has been forged in fire and came out stronger on the other side. I received a copy of this book as a gift and this is my honest and voluntary review.

This story is about Amanda and Jamie who meet on the wagon train from Independence, MO to Oregon City. Jamie came from Oregon City to marry Amanda's travelling companion, but they discovered that they had no chemistry between them. However sparks soon fly between Amanda and Jamie, but since Amanda was jilted herself, she is unwilling to do the same to her mail order husband. Once Jamie finds out to whom she is betrothed, he tries to warn her about how abusive the man is, but Amanda cannot reconcile that description with that of the man who wrote her letters. Amanda is also unwilling to break her word because she feels that it is all she has. Once the wagon train arrives in Oregon City, Amanda decides to visit her betrothed and decide for herself what kind of man he is and man does she learn the hard way. Upon hearing that Amanda does not want to get married right away, Baxter decides to teach her a lesson by not only raping her, but also beating her within an inch of her life. Once Amanda regains consciousness, she makes her way to the doctor's house. After he stitches her up, he helps her return to the wagon train where she encounters not only her friend, but Jamie. Amanda decides to press charges against Baxter and Jamie offers her protection and a safe haven at his place. Read this wonderful story to find out if Baxter gets what he deserves; if Amanda can reclaim her self-worth and if Amanda and Jamie can find a happy ending. I voluntarily read and reviewed an advanced copy of this book. All thoughts and opinions are my own.

About the author

Cynthia Woolf is the award-winning and best-selling author of forty-six historical western romance books and two short stories with more books on the way. She has also published six sci-fi, space opera romances, which she calls westerns in space. Along with these books she has also published four boxed sets of her books.

Cynthia loves writing and reading romance. Her first western romance Tame A Wild Heart, was inspired by the story her mother told her of meeting Cynthia's father on a ranch in Creede, Colorado. Although Tame A Wild Heart takes place in Creede that is the only similarity between the stories. Her father was a cowboy not a bounty hunter and her mother was a nursemaid (called a nanny now) not the ranch owner.

Cynthia credits her wonderfully supportive husband Jim and her great critique partners for saving her sanity and allowing her to explore her creativity.
