Tobin and Pettingell present an approach to competency development that begins by starting with the end in mind in defining first what problem you are trying to solve. Then after defining competence, the model development unfolds into three components: knowing and managing yourself, others and the business. Selecting, developing and managing development beyond training are covered in-depth as well as defining the roles of the manager, organizational leadership, Human Resources & training groups. In the appendix (including a reference where the user may download a PDF version) the AMA Management Development Competency Model is described in detail and accompanied by many illustrative behaviors for each competence. Besides being used as a foundation to develop a competency based performance management system, the competencies and illustrative behaviors provide value in performance appraisal & performance correction discussions as well as coaching & counseling sessions.
