Although it often grazes literary heights, this novel is best seen through a crime/noir genre lens, & with those properly gauged expectations, I can confidently call it a masterful work of fiction, a brilliant balance of restraint & indulgence, of pacing & action, setting & character. It is so much fun. And when it arrived, it was so thoroughly fresh & shocking. A rare page-turner. BRAVO

I loved being in Dexter's head, but the other characters fell really flat for me, and the plot itself seemed rather lackluster. Show aside, I didn't feel like I got to know any other character but Dexter, and LeGuerta at the end just seemed really forced, and Brian's reveal felt like it came way out of left field, I would have thought Dexter would investigate like he did in the show.... Disappointing all around with the exception of being in Dexter's head.

This is one of my favorite books; it's a thriller and a mystery combined. The plot is great and the characters are annoying, loveable and enjoyable all at the same time. The narrator, the main character, tells the story in a way that makes you question his sanity and root for him at the same time.
