About this ebook

Concise Ukrainian-English Dictionary features 3,600 hand-picked Ukrainian words used in daily speech, including slang – all you need to know to read, listen, and speak in most situations without being overwhelmed.

Ukrainian language counts over 250,000 words. This edition unlocks the vocabulary of an intermediate learner and provides a handy complementary guide to the Ukrainian language right at the beginning (Ukrainian alphabet, reading rules, Ukrainian parts of speech, and sentence structure).

Today, there are many reasons to learn Ukrainian. Regardless of the reason, it’s well worth the effort. Do you follow the ongoing political situation in Ukraine? Or maybe you are preparing for volunteer work or a business trip to Ukraine? Do you want to communicate with your Ukrainian-speaking colleagues, friends, or family members? Knowing some Ukrainian words or using this dictionary on the go will be of great help to you.

Even if you already speak some Ukrainian, this book will serve as a reference. Keep it handy and refer to it when you need to refresh your knowledge or come across a new word.

How to use the Concise Ukrainian-English Dictionary:

Learning the most common and useful Ukrainian words has never been easier!

Ukrainian words are listed in alphabetical order with accent (stress) marks.

Content in this dictionary is presented in 4 columns to facilitate the learning and searching processes, in the following manner:

афі́ша afísha  noun  poster

The 1st column features words in Ukrainian. The stressed letter is shown in red color and has an accent sign over it.

Pronunciation (transcription) is given in the 2nd column. The accent mark is also kept in the transcription.

Column 3 will tell you which part of speech the word belongs to.

The English translation is given in the 4th column.

Some words are marked as “(colloq.)” and some are marked as “(Slang!)” before the English translation to indicate their register (usage area).

Ukrainian language is a fusional, or inflected language in its structure. Therefore, in written texts or in speech you will notice that the endings of words change. All dictionaries - and this one is not an exception - will give you the not-inflected (infinitive) form of nouns, adjectives, pronouns, and verbs. This handy introductory guide to Ukrainian will explain how to unlock all the other variations and forms of words.

Who this Ukrainian dictionary is for:

This book is for self-motivated beginners and intermediate learners of Ukrainian. If you are willing to spend 20 minutes a day learning new words, this book will boost your Ukrainian vocabulary and will also allow you to get a “sense of the Ukrainian language”.

A good practice is to use this dictionary often to build a habit and to enlarge your vocabulary on the go. If you follow Ukrainian news or a blogger on social media, try to look up as many Ukrainian words as you can before you opt for an auto-generated translation.

A handy, affordable Ukrainian-to-English dictionary for daily use, including a guide to the Ukrainian language is here!

bought myself this yesterday on 4/10/2024 and it was worth buying especially if I want to brush up on my Ukrainian since last year was the actual year that I started studying the language however this book doesn't include audio files to where I could download audio files so as to follow along listen and repeat after the native speaker and what I like is that it's updated since 9/2023 (last year basically). Щиро дякую наперед (thanks in advance )

Love how this book 📖 is also transliterated but at the same time it follows along with the written Ukrainian script which helps non-native speakers to pronounce the words correctly

About the author

Dear readers, welcome to my author's page! My name is Darya Gunay. I'm a linguist and a language teacher. I hold Bachelor’s and Master’s degrees in Language Teaching (Ukrainian & English). I am also certified as a Teacher of Russian as a Foreign Language by the International Centre of Russian Language.

Initially trained as a teacher, I've always been keen on going beyond traditional school setting and getting into e-learning. My career path took me to various roles in online education, content creation, and communications field. My language projects allow me to unite 2 passions – for languages and for knowledge creation/sharing.

While teaching, I realized that there was a lack of good materials, so I started to create them myself. The materials available to me seemed too scattered, too repetitive or not adapted to foreigners at all. My textbooks explain complex things about my native languages in an easy way. I am on a mission to make my books accessible to foreign learners via publishing in various languages.

Speaking 4 languages myself - Ukrainian, Russian, English, and French - and raising a quadrilingual kid, I am a strong supporter of multilingual approach to education as it allows us to thrive in the global, hyper-connected world.
