Wer das nicht so sieht und wer sich in Zeiten von ständiger Erreichbarkeit und Burnout daran stört, der findet in Paul Lafargue einen frühen Mitstreiter für das Recht auf Faulheit. Lafargue meinte schon 1880, dass alles beherrscht sei von "-Arbeitssucht", dass es nur noch darum gehe, die Bedürfnisse des Menschen möglichst kleinzuhalten, seine Leidenschaften zu ersticken und ihn "zur Rolle einer Maschine zu verurteilen, aus der man pausenlos und gnadenlos Arbeit herausschindet" – im Interesse eines "Fortschritts" um seiner selbst willen, den Lafargue vehement ablehnte.
