Glücklicherweise hatte er eine Komödie geschrieben, die der Eitelkeit des Zaren Paul I. schmeichelte; er wurde infolgedessen bald begnadigt, zurückgeholt und mit einem Gut in Livland entschädigt. Seine Erlebnisse während dieser Zeit hat er in dem autobiographischen Werk Das merkwürdigste Jahr meines Lebens niedergeschrieben.
