About the author

In 1972, at age twenty-four, Dave Martin became a caseworker on the west side of Chicago. There he spent most of his working life. Although he worked elsewhere for a few years, he returned to the west side where he worked again for the Illinois Department of Children and Family Services and supervised a foster placement who was responsible for children taken away from their parents because of neglect or abuse. He always felt privileged to learn from people like Mrs. Leila Jones. Full of courage, wisdom, faith, and perseverance, people like her embrace children in need and find places for them in their hearts and homes.
