About the author
Born in frontier Kentucky in 1782, Daniel Mueller is a 22 year old hunter and trapper. His education was minimal, and like most other families of that era, he learned to read from the Bible. Happening upon Lewis & Clark soon after they had left St. Louis, Missouri, these men had been sent by President Jefferson to reach the headwaters of the Missouri River, and to find the long-searched-for Northwest Passage across North America.
He decides to keep a Journal, and since he spells as words are pronounced, it makes for fun reading. Travel is slow going, meeting numerous hazards along the way. The president had charged the Corps with making contact with as many Indian tribes as possible. They are also required to search out never before seen plants, animals, birds, fish and insects, mapping their journey through unknown regions where no Americans had ever been, achieving their goal of reaching the Pacific Ocean and returning safely to civilization.
The Lewis & Clark Expedition returns to St. Louis, with the loss of only one man throughout their journey.
