Non è semplice ricostruire la storia, davvero accidentata, di quest'opera, il cui nucleo originario può farsi addiritttura risalire agli anni giovanili del filosofo di Stilo, spesi, per lo più, nell'approfondimento della filosofia naturale, sulla scia dell'insegnamento telesiano.
