This is a new translation from the original Russian manuscript of Gogol's work "Dead Souls". This edition contains an Afterword by the Translator, a timeline of Gogol's life and works and an Index of Gogol's individual works. Arguably Gogol's magnum opus, this novel satirizes Russian society through the adventures of Chichikov, a man who buys the titles to deceased serfs in a scheme to exploit a legal loophole. Gogol's blend of realism, grotesque, and absurdism had a profound influence on Russian and world literature.
