Dean Koontz used to be so much better than this. The characters all sound alike and use the same unusual cadance and phrasing in their speech. The plot is loose and the action meanders. The ending is a surprise and not in a good way... it comes out of nowhere and falls flat. I rolled my eyes multiple times at his portrayal of certain groups, including journalists and kids. Rape was threatened or insinuated so many times that I wondered why such a creative writer couldn't come up with something more creative. In short, not his best work. Not by a long shot.

I have read several Dean Koontz books but sadly did not read the first book to this series. I feel I was able to pick up the story line fairly quickly without having read the first book. I loved the technological aspects of this suspenseful thriller. This stuff may have seemed far-fetched at one time but now I'm thinking this could really happen in the not-so-distant future. Kind of scary to think about. This was a great paced read with lots of action and suspense. Jane Hawk is such a bad ass! I want her on my side for sure. I also enjoyed Luther and his family. I would recommend this to anyone who loves thrillers mixed with a little technology. I definitely will pick up the first book in this series "The Silent Corner". A great, action-packed and intrigue-filled adventure. Some elements seemed unnecessary to the plot. The whole RV rescue happened...why? To demonstrate Jane's ever present sense of duty, sense of noble righteousness? I also felt frustrated by the twisting tale of Luther's family - beginning as intelligent characters only to be lost for no needed reason. (Exception being Jolie...) Also, why did Luther have trouble recalling the constellations and why did he take those 'evidence' items out of his office? I expected him to have been injected. Was that not a foreshadowing? I did find the "whispering room" concept quite fascinating! Loved how Jane used it to help the kids escape. That entire town was full of potential plot. Maybe in Book #3? Jane is exceptional at planning her interrogations. The dialogue and detail make for page-turning. As others have said, I'm not sure how to feel about the ending. Hope that Book #3 will renew the intrigue of Book #1 - far & away better.
