I received an Advanced Readers Copy from Booksprout in exchange for an honest review. Death Takes a Detour is the first book in a series called Outside the Circle about Grimm Abbie and her new friends. As soon as Abbie finds herself truly in the thick of things - having magical tools and running from evil - I was hooked. I wanted to read on. And did in one go. The story is easy to read and has a decent tempo. The use of the English language is uncomplicated, making it effortless to grasp for non-native speakers and younger children. While it imho focuses a lot more on friendship than on the horrors of the supernatural, this does not mean 'boring'. Enough happens to keep the tempo and us readers going. I would've liked to see more, faster world building and a not so easy to guess murderer, but my curiosity about book 2 is still big. With Grimm Grimshaw Vedam has created a fantasy character/world that's fresh and promising. If the promise comes true, it can become a popular series.
