Der Vierwaldstättersee liegt malerisch eingebettet zwischen den vier Kantonen Uri, Schwyz, Nidwalden und Luzern in der Zentralschweiz. Der See ist in der letzten Eiszeit vor 12 000 Jahren aus dem Reussgletscher entstanden; die Reuss bildet auch heute noch den Zufluss aus dem Gotthardmassiv. Der Vierwaldstättersee wurde in der letzten Eiszeit vom Reussgletscher geformt. Der See selbst bildete sich als Gletscherrandsee am Ende der Eiszeit vor rund 12 000 Jahren.
