About this ebook

Diana Butler Bass, one of contemporary Christianity’s leading trend-spotters, exposes how the failings of the church today are giving rise to a new “spiritual but not religious” movement. Using evidence from the latest national polls and from her own cutting-edge research, Bass, the visionary author of A People’s History of Christianity, continues the conversation began in books like Brian D. McLaren’s A New Kind of Christianity and Harvey Cox’s The Future of Faith, examining the connections—and the divisions—between theology, practice, and community that Christians experience today. Bass’s clearly worded, powerful, and probing Christianity After Religion is required reading for anyone invested in the future of Christianity.

I am only on the 2nd chapter but what she says really resonates with me. I have been Calvinist, Anglican, and Roman Catholic but none of these churches offer anything in this modern world for its members. I believe Jesus existed, But was he God? No! Was he born of a virgin? An ancient fairy tale! Was man ever perfect? Never has been and never will be. I find the idea of perfection and insult to the human race. Oh yes I believe there is a God because we humans have yet to create life (other than the usual way). The bible is a very valuable book but I would not base my life on it (see the number of various denominations all claiming to be based on the Bible). I know our present existence is just a small foretaste of what is to come. I had a Near Death experience (hence the knowledge). I agree with Dr. Bass that the various churches are in self preservation mode. I look forward to reading more of Dr. Bass's book. As I got To A New Vision and Awaking I became disenchanted. She is trying to raise the old doctrines and dogma again. I cannot agree with her conclusions.
